Con letra y música de Peter Seeger, esta canción de 1961 se puede calificar como los inicios de la canción protesta.

La canción es lenta, acústica y para escuchar en determinados momentos... Puede ser triste, continuamente se pregunta a dónde fueron las flores (las chicas las arrancaron), a dónde fueron las chicas jóvenes (se casaron)... y a dónde fueron todos los chicos jóvenes (se hicieron soldados)... y a dónde fueron los soldados (acabaron en los cementerios)... y qué quedó de los cementerios (fueron cubiertos con flores)... completando así el ciclo. Una versión moderna podría ser la de Jorge Drexler con "Todo se transforma".

Enmarcado antes de la guerra de Vietnam, o de la de Bosnia, o de la de Afganistán o de la de Irak... una canción inmortal mientras los mortales se empeñen en demostrar que los bandos rivales son mortales mediante guerras absurdas. En ocasiones me pregunto cómo se sentirán los astronautas, mirando desde la ISS a la tierra y pensando: "en ese globo azul... hay miles de hombres dispuestos a matar a otros miles... qué estúpidos..."
